Sally Johnson Harlan, age 87, of Jackson, Tennessee, passed away on July 11, 2026, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was the beloved wife of the late Grover Van Harlan. Born in 1939 to the late Thomas Coke Johnson and Elizabeth Pride Johnson, whom she deeply adored.
Sally was a true Southern belle whose warmth and genuine spirit made her instantly likable to everyone she met. She had a rare gift for making people feel seen and valued, whether she was chatting with a neighbor, welcoming a new acquaintance, or brightening someone’s day with her easy laughter and gracious manner.
Sally graduated from Jackson High School in 1957 and later shared her creativity and kindness as an elementary art teacher at EDS. She was a longtime member of the Tennessee Watercolor Society, the Jackson Service League, the Jackson Arts Council, the Symphony League, and the Mary Anna Ashby Association. An accomplished watercolor artist, she was especially known for her beautiful landscapes and participated in numerous art shows and Downtown Jackson art projects. She studied under Paul Penzer of Memphis and continued to grow as an artist throughout her life.
Beyond her art, Sally found great joy in her garden, a peaceful sanctuary, and she held a deep affection for animals and birds. The consummate hostess and party planner, Sally so enjoyed gatherings over meals with her friends and family. Her love of beauty and her generous heart touched everyone around her.
Above all, Sally was most proud of her family. She cherished her three children and took great delight in her eight grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Sally is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Harlan Jerge and her husband, Kevin Jerge, along with their daughters, Elle and Annika. She is also survived by her grandchildren Alexandra, Niall, Georgina, Aidan, Sarah, and Katy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Van Harlan, and her sons, Jonathan Harlan (Fiona) and Thomas (Denise) Harlan.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 3 PM on July 19, 2026, with a reception immediately following. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Jackson Humane Society and the Alice & Carl Kirkland Cancer Center.
